This viewpoint also argues that the Hound's use of activated talents will be infrequent at best, so it's best to emphasize damage through its standard attacks. The idea is that another character like Alistair can play the tank role, allowing the Hound with its speed to quickly swoop in from the flank. *Note* Paracelsi has a different preference for treating the Hound as a damage dealer, and therefore putting everything into Strength. The script is very similar to the one that I use for the Blight Wolf: The biggest knock against the Hound for me is that he doesn't really provide anything that I couldn't already get from Leliana summoning the Blight Wolf in as a free fifth party member. In the end, it just isn't enough for me to keep him on as a core party member. One other is that the Hound is not susceptible to grab attacks from certain boss monsters like the High Dragon and the Brood Mother. Another is that the Dog is one of the relatively best for using the 'drawing out' technique, since his running speed allows him to quickly regroup with the party. One is I guess the 'coolness' factor of having your own dog as a joinable companion. 
His armor, attack, and defense ratings are not anything to write home about. I have to say I never really use the Hound on any ongoing basis. I can't really give any advice here, since the Hound will easily be able to get every talent available to him. Strength 20 Dexterity 17 Willpower 15 Magic 12 Cunning 11 Constitution 13
